Hoping for more of a fuss

In the past few days several media sources have reported the findings of some major studies that show cell phone use is a major cause of accidents on the road.  “Research shows that motorists talking on a phone are four times as likely to crash as other drivers, and are as likely to cause an accident as someone with a .08 blood alcohol content,” to quote the NYTimes.  And yes, this is whether the phone is hands-free or not; it’s engaging in a conversation that causes the trouble.

Sydney and I have often mocked all of the drivers and pedestrians we see either talking or (worse!) texting; they look and act like zombies.  This, in one of the few states in the country that’s made illegal cell phone use while driving.  Only some of our rancor comes from the fact that we unhappily joined the 45 percent of people who were in an accident caused by cellphone use.

What I find sad is that, despite having read all of these studies and observed all of this behavior, I know I, too, would use a phone while driving if I had one.  The impulse to maximize time (I mean, I would read while driving if it looked even slightly more plausible) is so strong that I don’t have any delusions about being above the fray.  Although I’m very excited to see that these studies are getting a bit more attention, I am saddened that we don’t address the larger issue: why emphasize efficiency, multitasking, etc., such that our judgment fails us in such important decisions?

Time for the thesaurus

Katherine is growing.  In particular, her lungs are getting quite powerful.  Sydney describes one of her cries as a foghorn.  I call it bellowing.

I see we’re going to develop a rich vocabulary of “Katherine cries” by the time she’s grown.

And good times were had by all

I think Katherine liked having Sarah and Lisa visit.  With two “aunts” around she got a lot more attention than with two measly parents.  And I liked that S&L made her laugh for ten minutes straight!

School preparations

This fall I’m going to be teaching a course on non-linear narratives (stories that don’t unfold in chronological order), and, after much agonizing, I’ve finally settled on a reading list:

– Short stories by Borges

– Einstein’s Dreams, by Alan Lightman (such a fun book!)

– Pale Fire, by Vladimir Nabokov

– Jacob’s Room, by Virginia Woolf

– The Sound and the Fury, by William Faulkner

– We’ll finish up with a look at some really old non-linear stories (Arabian Nights, Tristram Shandy) and some really new ones (novels written in hypertext)

Can’t wait!  Can’t wait!

Truly lovely

We made the most of the gorgeous day by taking Katherine for a hike at Watkins Glen, home of shallow pools, deep gorges, and two places where you walk behind (or, as the erosion continues, underneath) waterfalls.  Katherine seemed a bit overwhelemed by the warmth and humidity and slept for much of the day, leaving the two of us to enjoy the hike, eat some great sandwiches on our way back home, and have some quiet time for reading.

Roommate fun

My college roommates, Lisa and Sarah, were here for the weekend to meet Katherine and let me indulge in some girl fun (Sydney made himself scarce).  We hiked Treman State Park (where I somehow got us off the path, leaving us to wade the river to get back on it), visited the Ithaca Farmer’s Market, took a brief tour of campus, and spent many hours entertaining Katherine.  Between them, Lisa and Sarah not only got Katherine to smile , but they got her to giggle for something like 20 minutes straight.  Way to go!!!

Seems pretty quiet without you two; are you sure you don’t want to come back next weekend?  Katherine is not nearly as satisfied with us now that she has only half the entertainment around.

and giggling

Katherine really likes the mirror by the changing table. And she giggles when adults act like idiots:

smiling

As a general rule, Katherine immediately adopts a sullen stare when a camera comes close, but we did manage to get this very short clip of her smiling a while ago.

old photos #2

And  here are a few pictures from our not-entirely-happy visit to Acadia National Park.

First, a gorgeous view of the rugged coast and out onto the Atlantic from one of the mountains:

I’d heard that there was great birdwatching to be had. I found a gull:

Okay, not quite everything was white:

I especially liked the natural bonsai pine trees. It’s a bit hard to tell the size in the picture, but these trees are only a little taller than I am:
