Now just to clarify, is this one of the library book sales like my mom goes to where the average book costs between $0.50-$1?

Clearly, they entered the total price into the credit card swipy machine wrong. Maybe a couple extra 0’s. 🙂
Lisa is right about what kind of book sale this is, though the books here are perhaps closer to $2-4 each and it might be worth noting that this is the third largest such sale in the country, i.e., 250,000-300,000 books at each sale. At a lot of library book sales you couldn’t spend $10,000 even if you bought every single book there. Here, not so hard.
But, to assuage the worries of those of you who are wondering if we are ready to be having children just yet, yes, Rachel is pretty much right about what happened. The elderly volunteer using the credit card machine was significantly better at pressing the 0 button than at reading the screen.
All of this ended up being a royal mess, since, after the initial charge was voided, a block was placed on our credit card (the activity naturally looked rather suspicious). So a poor volunteer — who was dreadfully unhappy about the situation — had to spend close to half an hour on the phone trying to get things sorted out. I felt rather bad for her. But, eventually everything was resolved, the block was removed, and we managed to get a $100.75 charge through.

Hmmm…I didn’t realize grad students were paid so well:)
Verify that your bank doesn’t ‘accidently’ charge you a fee for going over your limit, if indeed the balance took you over your limit.
By the way Erin, I thought you had already taken all the children’s books from home…
I see where this is headed…a Baby Penner book wish list on Amazon…
