Returning Home

Sydney and I are eating dinner in our own home, after some unpacking and much petting of our cat.  We had a wonderful visit with Sydney’s parents (yeah, and you too, Nelson), and now we’re back home to a rainy Ithaca that encourages some sleeping and some reading.

That’s just fine by me, because my Harry Potter has arrived in the mail. 🙂 🙂  Sydney is a bit skeptical of the merits of the book series, but I am not inclined to hear much from him until he reads one or more of the books.  Of course, finding time to tuck in another book or two is something we have difficulty with, so our lists of books for each to read for the other are growing . . .

This visit we took the ferry from Digby, Nova Scotia to Saint John, New Brunswick.  After fitting our car in the bay we had three hours to wander on deck, sit and eat strawberries and chocolate (yes, now you see why we enjoy traveling so much), and listen to a museum guide give lectures about the marine life of the area.  We also saw some whales!  Apparently our visit coincided with their peak feeding time in the Bay of Fundy, so we were given a real treat.

We love reading Harry Potter and don’t really care who knows it. Make sure that Syndey reads at least two, because in my opinon the first one is the worst(although still good) Jk Rowlings really hits her stride at around book 3.

I really like Book 1, but I think my favorite so far is 3. Yeah, I’ll try to get him to read as many as possible, but it might get a bit difficult to hand him a 700-page book to read, much less more than one. Maybe I’ll just have to give him the impression that I think he’s too SLOW to read such a book to get him going.

3 is my favorite book too! I always get into these discussions with people and everyone loves 4 and 5, which I did not like nearly as much.

    Although I enjoyed 6 and 7 a lot! 🙂

    Enjoy #7!!!

  4. Are you guys coming out to Goshen for conference?

in preparation for 7, i read #6 in its entirety on sunday and have now started 7. modern day Tolkien or Lewis? i think so. 🙂

I will confess that I’m not a huge fan of Harry Potter. Not because I object on any moral grounds, but because I’m not really into fantasy anyway and I (gasp) don’t think it’s particularly good writing. I never made it to book 3, however, so maybe that one would have hooked me. Hey, at least I tried!

Unfortunately, it looks like we won’t make it to Goshen. It would be fun, but we’ve been away from home quite a bit recently and are starting to realize that our summer is almost over and that we’ll have a hard time finishing all the stuff that needs to be finished before next semester.

Just started Book 7. I think the early ones were best. 5 was just OK (and I think the movie made it less eventful than the book). 6 pissed me off – nothing was accomplished. It was really just “Book 7, part I”. In all the other books, some goal was achieved (stone rescued, snake destroyed, etc.), but in that one it wasn’t. I have higher hopes for 7, but not sure when I’ll have time to read…

  9. Rhonda says:

book 6 seemed to be drawn out, while (hopefully not a spoiler)book 7 seemed to be summed up too quickly (all 750+/- pages)
