Wearing Katherine

Apparently we’re unwittingly fashionable:  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/11/fashion/11BABY.html?hp

Who knew?

No, I do not collect baby carriers like other women collect handbags.  I do have to wonder that nobody mentions how quickly babies get heavy.  I mean, at 23 pounds or so Katherine is a bit of  a load to be hauling very far in the backpack (unless we’re just really up for a sweaty, slightly back-breaking outing).  Or are these pricey handbags only for the infant stage?

We have one of those hiking backpacks with an aluminum frame and they are so much better! Ryan has successfully carried all of ours until about 30-35 lbs. I can too but I can’t usually make it as long as he can. Anyway if you’re going a long way with a bigger baby/toddler…you need one with a frame to help distribute the weight. I’m sure Katherine gets quite heavy. 🙂

I love backpacks (just got back from a four-mile walk with Katherine in ours), but there’s no way around it: 20+ pounds is just heavy. Heavy enough to make me laugh at anything the ladies in the article seem concerned with (does my carrier match my shirt or handbag?). There’s definitely no way that I could carry K very far in an elegant sling, for sure!
